DBVW Architects presented the finishes and interior design plans for the Valley Road Elementary School conversion during the Feb. 11 meeting, walking the committee through corridors, classroom groupings and new learning commons.
Emma Osborne and Sarah Whiteley described a layout with district administration near the main entry, grouped grade‑level classrooms, retained makerspace, and improvements aimed at elementary‑level use. The team said they will replace platform lifts and stair lifts to improve accessibility and are proposing resilient flooring (marmoleum) and new locker configurations sized for elementary students.
The design team also showed concepts for two learning commons with felt acoustic baffles, millwork storage, striping and playful acoustic panels. Bathroom renovations include child‑height fixtures and plumbing walls with distinct accent colors to add visual interest. A proposal request to Bentley was noted for removing the existing stage; cost information for that alternate is pending.
Committee members praised the palette and light wood tones and asked for a prioritized, costed list of alternates and wish‑list items, including playgrounds and classroom furnishings. One committee member said the district had allocated money for two new playgrounds and new furniture for classrooms and the cafeteria, but asked that the items be provided in a list for committee review.
Presenters said some items (playgrounds, landscape design, new water service) were not included in the HMFH design scope and could be handled separately. Committee members requested that the FF&E user groups continue to develop schedules and that branding and graphics (Middletown blue and corridor themes) be coordinated with the school committee.
The committee did not vote on finishes at this meeting but directed staff and designers to produce cost breakdowns and to continue coordination with facilities and the school department.
