Commission defers Soccer Star Academy facility-use agreement after scheduling questions

He told colleagues the agreement language should protect city priorities and ensure neighborhood access. "We give an opportunity to people to bring a healthy program to help our community," Santiago said during the discussion.
Commissioner Irvin and other commissioners raised practical concerns about scheduling. Parks staff told the commission that flag football and other organized activities are already using nearby fields and that staffing and overtime constraints affect after-hours availability. Parks staff said an unrelated rental previously approved still has sessions remaining and that the department must coordinate multiple activities to avoid conflicts.
After questioning from commissioners and an exchange with parks staff, Santiago asked to defer the resolution so the manager's office and parks staff could verify which days and times are available and ensure contract language preserves city priority for special events. The commission agreed to defer the item to the first meeting in March; no final vote on the facility-use agreement occurred.
The deferral leaves open the substance of any future agreement: commissioners said they expect more detailed scheduling information, clearer language about priority for city events and assurance that scholarships and community access will be enforced. The commission encouraged interim meetings with the city manager and department staff ahead of the March meeting.
