Residents press commission on gas hookups, dusty roads and pave plan; town studies cell tower

Resident Joe Cox said he was quoted $11,000 by an Apopka Gas representative to bring a gas line to his house and asked who decided the gas-line routing. Mayor Taylor said town staff would follow up with the company and offered to help gather answers.
Another resident asked about a road plan and dust control. Staff reported two trial roads covered with asphalt millings—recycled material from parking lots and road projects—and said those trials produced little dust when driven. The commission described a plan to pave a 12-foot-wide connector from Star Street to Winters Landing (Henson) to link paved sections; staff said three qualified bids were received and estimated the cost for that section at roughly $23,000.
Mayor Taylor also said a carrier heat map shows the town is a cellphone coverage 'dead zone' and that the town is exploring siting a cell tower on town property to improve reception and generate lease revenue.
Commissioners said they will continue testing surfacing materials and pursue paving priorities by traffic volume and budget. Residents requested cost comparisons between surface materials and full paving; staff said they are compiling data and pursuing bids for the prioritized sections.
