Oakland Police Department honors officers for community service and names officer of the year

Chief presented a community service award to Corporal Justin Gao for purchasing a floor jack to help a stranded motorist on State Road 50 and ensuring the motorist left the roadway safely. The chief also read a lengthy list of officers who participated in Shop with a Cop at a Claremont Walmart on Dec. 20; Oakland PD raised funds to sponsor 21 children, each receiving $100, and department members accompanied children during the shopping event.
Officer Rayneliz Rojas, a reserve officer since 2021, was named Officer of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2024 for traffic enforcement, community engagement and assisting families in need. School resource officer Samaria Lake was named Oakland Police Department Officer of the Year for 2024 for her work with Oakland Avenue Charter School students and staff and for community engagement.
Chief praised officers for volunteerism and commitment, noting the department depends on members who participate beyond regular shifts. No formal action was required for the awards.
The awards underline departmental community outreach efforts, including holiday support programs and school resource activities.
