The Bloomington Common Council voted on May 7 to send a 2026 budget priorities letter to the mayor’s office after editing and removing several italicized items tied to countywide EMS responsibilities.
During reports and committee time the council reviewed a packet addendum and discussed three italicized public-safety lines. Council member Piedmont Smith objected to a countywide EMS objective as beyond the city’s jurisdiction; Council member Asari withdrew an EMS salary-offset line. The council president announced she would delete all italicized countywide EMS items for transparency and to reflect the city’s scope of authority.
Members then discussed a health-and-human-services investment proposing $200,000 to colocate mental-health services with existing social-service agencies. Council member Daley said she did not find an existing local program matching the proposal and supported adding parenthetical language encouraging partnership with organizations working on similar initiatives; council agreed to add phrasing to "consider supporting organizations working on this initiative."
Councilmember Asari moved to send the letter (motion seconded by Piedmont Smith); the motion passed on a voice vote after an "aye" call with no opposition recorded. The package to the mayor will include the letter, the list of items that scored above a 3, and full survey results so the administration receives the council’s full priorities and supporting data.
