Timothy P. Werk of 1819 West Jefferson Street spoke during public comment at the Sandusky City Commission meeting on Jan. 26, urging the city to publish and clarify Sandusky Police Department policy governing interactions between local officers and federal agents.
Werk said he was “in a state of shock” after viewing images and footage of recent national incidents involving federal officers and expressed fear for the safety of community members, including those with brown skin. He requested documentation or an assurance from city leadership about who the Sandusky Police Department would protect in encounters with unmarked or armed federal personnel, including agents he identified as ICE.
"I am looking for some direction, assurance of documentation of our city's law enforcement policy when Sandusky citizens may find themselves interacting with ICE agents, border agents, or whoever shows up with some type of tactical gear," Werk said.
Werk asked the commission to unify the community in preventing further tragedies and to provide clear policies or public guidance on how local law enforcement will respond during encounters with federal personnel. The commission did not provide an immediate policy change or formal action but thanked the commenter for bringing the concern forward; no staff policy pronouncement was made at the meeting.
The comment was taken under audience participation; commissioners did not announce a follow-up timeline during the meeting.
