Neighbors object to Magnolia Boulevard condo plans; hearing continued to March
Summary
Neighbors testified that a proposed four-unit, three-story condominium at 1031 Magnolia Boulevard lacked outreach and raised privacy, safety and traffic concerns; the Planning Commission opened the hearing and voted 3-0 to continue the item to March 3, 2026 for additional review and notice.
The Gardena Planning and Environmental Quality Commission on an evening meeting opened public testimony on a proposed four-unit, three-story condominium at 1031 Magnolia Boulevard and continued the matter to a date certain of March 3, 2026.
Neighbors described repeated failures by the developer to engage the community and said changes to plans were circulated with inadequate notice. "They changed the plans without communicating or providing them to the people in the neighborhood," said Michael Lee, a nearly 25-year resident of Gardena, who said the parcel is overgrown, has construction debris and previously hosted encampments. Resident Javier Marquez said the project’s height and bulk would be out of scale with the surrounding one-story single-family homes and raised concerns about privacy for his young daughters and additional traffic on Magnolia Boulevard near the Gardena Bowl.
Staff told the Commission the item was filed as a noticed public hearing and recommended opening the hearing, taking testimony, and continuing the item to a date certain to allow additional review and public notice; staff said four emails from neighbors had been received. After testimony, the Commission voted 3-0 to continue the hearing to March 3, 2026.
The continuance means the Commission will receive additional materials and public outreach before making findings or taking final action. At the continuation the Commission will review any supplemental environmental materials, revised plans or written correspondence submitted by the public or applicant. The transcript did not record a full motion text with a clearly named mover for the continuance beyond a second attributed to Commissioner Sherman.
