The Gardena City Council introduced Ordinance No. 18‑87 on Jan. 27 to amend the municipal code by adding chapter 15.36 and establish an expedited permitting process for electric vehicle charging stations.
City staff said the ordinance is intended to comply with state requirements to provide a streamlined administrative permitting pathway and an objective checklist covering electrical capacity, equipment ratings, ventilation and clearances. Staff noted many of the procedures (including electronic plan submittal) are already in place and the ordinance would formalize the checklist and process.
Councilmember Francis asked whether the streamlined process applied to commercial and residential installations; staff confirmed the ordinance is designed to apply broadly and to address technical issues such as electrical service capacity and fire safety. On a motion by Council member Francis, seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Henderson, the council introduced the draft ordinance for first reading; the vote was recorded as 5 ayes.
