Patrick McCool, president of Historic Bellefonte Incorporated, asked council to expedite review of a special-events application for a planned "First Responders Weekend" May 15–16 that would use a similar downtown footprint to the Bellefonte Cruise. McCool said the event will feature competitions and prizes for first-responder teams and has sponsorship funding to pay prize awards.
Staff confirmed the borough has the application and is reviewing it with the police department and public works. Council and staff said special-event street-closure permits are handled administratively but that any open-container allowance would require council approval; staff asked the organizer to provide detailed plans so the chief of police and staff can assess safety and operational impacts before council acts on any open-container request.
Council requested the application be provided to members for review; staff indicated the item is likely to appear on the next regular council meeting agenda for formal consideration of open-container permission and final street-closure approvals.
Next steps: staff will continue administrative review with police and public works, and the organizer will supply details to support any council decision on open-container permission.
