Council designates Miles Romney home as local landmark

The St. George City Council voted to designate the Miles Romney home at 255 South 100 West as a local historic landmark.
Brenda, a city planning staffer, told the council the house was built between 1862 and 1865 and lies within the St. George Arts District and the proposed historic district. She said the Historic Preservation Commission recommended the designation after finding the property met criteria a–c and item f of code section 10-13e-4, which covers properties associated with persons important to local history. "He was the superintendent of construction for the Saint George Temple," Brenda said, and she noted Miles Romney also designed the Saint George Tabernacle and the Brigham Young Winter Home and Office and was an ancestor of politician Mitt Romney.
Councilmember Danielle Larkin moved to approve the designation and Michelle Tanner seconded the motion. The council voted in favor and the motion carried.
The designation allows the property owner to pursue next steps under local code, including applying for a conditional use permit if they seek to convert the building to a law office, a path staff said the owner may pursue. The staff report and the Historic Preservation Commission packet provided additional historical documentation and interior and exterior photos. The action concluded with no recorded conditions attached to the designation.
The council took the vote during its regular meeting after a brief staff presentation and public review by the Historic Preservation Commission.
