St. George celebrates Tree City USA status, honors wastewater staff

St. George City Council opened its meeting by highlighting the city's long-running urban-forestry efforts and recognizing two utility employees for statewide awards.
City staff member Shane announced that St. George has been designated a Tree City USA for the 34th consecutive year, noting the city’s tree ordinance, annual shade report and Arbor Day activities. "We are now, in Tree City USA for the 34th consecutive year," Shane said, adding the city aims to plant about 500 trees annually and typically achieves roughly 400–500 plantings.
Councilmember Danielle praised the program as a heat-mitigation strategy in the desert, saying Las Vegas’s recent struggles underscore the importance of shade and drought-tolerant landscaping. "It's really important in the desert for us to have trees to mitigate the heat, save water, and keep our temperature down," Danielle said.
The council also presented awards from the Water Environment Association to two city employees. Mayor Pro Tem read citations for Heidi Mathis, named outstanding pretreatment specialist of the year, and Glenn Bean, named wastewater treatment operator of the year. Both recipients thanked their teams; Mathis and Bean were lauded by council members for professionalism, public service and innovation in plant operations.
No action was required for these recognitions. The meeting proceeded to the evening’s agenda.
