Committee approves consent slate and several place namings; continues street-lighting item

The Public Works Committee approved a slate of consent items and moved several place-naming and procedural items forward. Mister Espinosa read items 3 and 5 through 12 into the record; the chair recommended approval of items 3, 5, 8, 10 and 12 as written, adoption of the Bureau of Engineering’s recommendations for item 9, and concurrence with Energy and Environment Committee recommendations for item 11. Mister Espinosa recorded 2 ayes (Council members Hernandez and Padilla) with Council member Hutt absent; the consent items were approved.

Notable consent actions included the designation of the intersection of West 8th Street and Valencia Street in Westlake as Francisco Morazan Central American Community Square (item 3); a motion on pothole inventory and repairs (item 5); initiation of proceedings for a pedestrian mall proposal on Mulholland Highway to provide public access to Griffith Park as presented in item 8; the city attorney’s report and ordinance to create Tupacchi Place (item 9); an exception to the street-cut moratorium on San Fernando Road for work at 12534 San Fernando Road in Sylmar (item 10); authorization related to the procurement method for the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant Phase 1 recycled-water project (item 11); and a motion to name the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Bellboro Boulevard as Wheelchair Basketball Square (item 12). Items 6 and 7—designations for Doctor Yvonne Chan Square (Van Nuys Boulevard and Herrick Avenue) and Anita Zapeta Square (Harrods Square and Paxton Street)—were read and approved following Council member Padilla’s comments praising nominees and their ties to local campuses.

The chair also proposed continuing item 4 to the committee’s Feb. 25 meeting so that the Public Works Committee’s meeting that day can be wholly devoted to bureau street lighting. The desk was cleared and the committee adjourned after the consent actions and remaining votes.
