At its Sept. 15 meeting the Crescent City Council approved routine business, authorized staff to pursue a traffic‑enforcement grant, and heard multiple operational updates on public safety and city facilities.
Consent and grants: the council approved a seven‑item consent calendar that included claims, minutes, payroll and budget amendments. The police department presented an Office of Traffic Safety local enforcement grant application (no equipment allowed) and requested authority for the city manager to sign the grant agreement if awarded; staff said the city applied for $16,900 of up to $30,000 available under the program, and the council approved the submission and signature authorization unanimously.
Public facilities and safety updates: Director Yeager briefed the council on a non‑city Army Corps of Engineers project to add gates, signage and thermoplastic warnings along the jetty to deter hazardous access; staff said a Corps change order for upgraded brackets and cabling is pending. Yeager also reported the pool roof project is essentially complete — the low bidder came in at $179,000 against an earlier estimate of $275,000 and anticipated total spending is about $204,000 — and described related repairs and added safety tie‑offs.
Chief Richard Griffin (referenced by staff) said he is pursuing a roughly $110,000 request to obtain and upfit a mobile incident command/forensics vehicle; staff said the vehicle would serve the city and might assist neighboring agencies if approved, and the council asked that the finalized request come back for approval.
Council stipends: staff reported current council stipends were set in 2009 ($610.92/month) and that state law sets a higher maximum ($950/month for Crescent City). Council discussion focused on trade‑offs with infrastructure needs; the council gave direction to drop near‑term action on stipend increases and to reconsider the issue after the next election.
Votes at a glance: consent calendar (approved, unanimous); authorization of MOU with RCTA to secure library lot (approved, unanimous); award of Front Street Phase 1C contract to Tidewater (approved, unanimous); OTS grant application ($16,900) (approved, unanimous).
