Board hears first reading of revised policies covering AI, fentanyl education, public participation and audits

Flossmoor SD 161 trustees received a first reading on Jan. 29 of an updated policy packet recommended by the Illinois Association of School Boards.
Highlights include a standard three-minute limit for public participants, updated language to require provisions for nursing mothers, a recommended annual audit filing deadline with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and curriculum and safety additions: fentanyl education, online safety starting in grade 3, and language addressing artificial intelligence in bullying prevention guidance. Student-behavior language was amended to require reporting when staff become aware of threats of gun violence and to require immediate notification to parents or guardians in such cases. The packet also proposes broader suicide and depression awareness training for all district staff who work with students.
"For public participation at school board meetings, we have three minutes as the time for each person to speak," a presenter said. Staff emphasized that the package is a recommended set of changes designed to align district policy with state guidance and legal compliance; they said final adoption will follow board discussion and a public-notice period.
Next steps: staff will post highlighted changes online, incorporate board feedback and return in two weeks for possible approval and handbook updates for the coming school year.
