Flossmoor SD 161 administration asked the board on Jan. 29 to consider adding one district technician and two special-education resource teachers midyear to meet immediate student needs.
Staff said the technician position would cost roughly $45,000 to $50,000 and would support troubleshooting, repairs and district-wide technology tasks. For special education, staff reported that 21 existing students have qualified for special education services this year and 44 students who moved into the district require IEP minutes; administration said those numbers have produced oversized small groups at some schools and make additional staff necessary to meet evidence-based staffing ratios.
"Twenty-one have qualified of our current students and 44 new students moved in," a presenter said. Staff recommended one additional SPED resource teacher at Heather Hill and one at Western Avenue and said they will return with a formal staffing and budget recommendation. Trustees asked about residency checks and whether the influx could be from nonresident transfers; staff said registration already captures IEP status and that they will run metrics and due diligence to understand drivers of the spike before any final vote.
Next steps: staff will return with a formal staffing proposal, costings and supporting data at a future meeting prior to any personnel action.
