District says sustainability management plan complete; lays out interim goals including native-plant 'living classrooms'

Corvallis School District's sustainability specialist reported Jan. 15 that the district has completed its 2019 Sustainability Management Plan (revised in 2023) and outlined five interim goals for the coming year.
Skye Rickert Latham said approximately 67% of the district's monthly energy footprint is produced from district-installed renewable sources, primarily rooftop solar. The interim goals include designing two native-plant "living classroom" blueprints (Bessie Coleman and Bridges), planting 100 native trees on selected campuses through an MOU with the Marys River Watershed Council, standardizing implementation of the Oregon Environmental Literacy Toolbox across K'12, creating a natural-resource CTE pathway for grades 5'12, and developing long-range sustainability planning that emphasizes student leadership.
Board members asked about student engagement and funding. Skye said student green teams are active districtwide and the district has secured modest grant funding (roughly $10,000 a year) that had funded a 0.25 music position at Muddy Creek; sustainability staff said they are trying to move toward general-fund support for long-term program sustainability.
Next steps: staff will bring back implementation details, timelines and opportunities for board site visits and requested that the board consider how savings from sustainability investments might be reinvested in program growth.
