Helotes council denies creative-sign variance for fence sign, urges redesign and P&Z review

Chris Butler, who said he works with Young Life, requested a creative-sign variance for a fence-mounted sign. Council members repeatedly said the current design looked like a business card and lacked distinguishing artwork or branding that would make it a candidate for the "creative sign" category. Council members also noted the city does not currently have detailed rules specific to fence signs; the city’s development-services director said she is working on fence-sign language for future ordinance updates.
Council member Sanders, who said he had toured the site, said he was willing to work with the applicant on a redesigned sign but could not support approval as presented. Other council members encouraged Butler to bring a revised design to P&Z or work with development services staff; staff confirmed conditional approval is not typical because the council must see the sign as it will be displayed.
Council voted on the item and the motion to approve the creative-sign variance failed.
