Students showcase solar boat program and school site highlights at Banning Unified meeting

At the March 13 board meeting, students from across Banning Unified highlighted academic, extracurricular and career-focused programs, including a presentation by the Banning High School solar boat team that won first place at last year’s competition.
Banning High students and coaches described the solar boat program’s hands-on learning: students said the program applies AP Physics and math to engineering work, introduces power-tool and electrical skills, and fosters problem solving and teamwork. Teacher-coach Klein said the program has run about 16 years and emphasized the importance of sustaining AP Physics classes to support students pursuing engineering and science pathways.
Student presenters from Nicolette, Coombs/New Horizon and Banning High shared site updates — school dances and family nights, Saturday school opportunities, college and field-trip visits, theater performances and spring sports schedules — and thanked staff and the district for support. Student board member Brian Calderon also praised campus energy and winter-sport achievements.
