Henrico highlights: Greenwood students, ASL game night and literacy awards spotlighted

Henrico County School Board's Oct. 23 meeting featured student performances and staff recognitions designed to highlight classroom learning and inclusion across the division.
Christopher Mosley, education specialist for performing arts, introduced Greenwood Elementary groups including a drum ensemble (led by music teacher Maria Murphy), an advanced dance team (led by Eleanor Robertson) and an advanced drum line (led by Harrison Press). Students described an engineering design project at the Center for Engineering (Highland Springs High School) to build catapults/trebuchets that improved through iteration; student teams reported improvements from an initial ~6-foot test to final launches up to about 140 feet.
The board also highlighted Lehi Allen Elementary's ASL game night, where deaf and hard-of-hearing students taught classmates American Sign Language through play; staff and interpreters said the activity builds inclusion and peer connections. The board recognized Samantha Carlisle as RVA literacy coach of the year and Casey McBride as RVA literacy teacher of the year for their leadership in literacy instruction across the division.
Chair and board members praised students and teachers for teamwork, problem-solving and inclusive practices. The recognitions concluded the "Henrico highlights" portion of the agenda before the board moved on to mission statement reading and other business.
