District facilities staff and an environmental consultant told the board that repeated pipe and roof failures at the old Cuyahoga Falls High School have produced ongoing water intrusion and a growing mold risk. "We've had we have had 27 leaks to date," a district facilities speaker reported after a walkthrough with an environmental engineer, who advised keeping boilers running and isolating damaged areas to limit mold and mildew growth.
The consultant recommended against fully shutting down the building while repairs and assessments proceed, citing rapid mildew growth at cool temperatures. The district's insurance contact cautioned that filing a large claim for demolition or full remediation could have consequences given the district's long claims history; the insurer advised not claiming if the building is to be demolished. Staff proposed controlled options for salvaging reusable items, including photographing items and selling them through a web-based auction that would limit people's presence in the building.
Separately, the board discussed a resolution authorizing the sale of a parcel (Thomas Court/tennis-court parcel) to the city of Cuyahoga Falls. The superintendent said the district had done due diligence including notifying a community-school partner about development rights; some board members expressed frustration at what they described as a multi-year delay by the city to complete promised repairs to the district's tennis courts but said authorizing the sale puts the district in position to complete the transaction.
The board approved the property-sale resolution by roll call (Aye votes recorded for members present). Earlier business on the agenda included routine treasurer items (a clean, unmodified audit opinion was reported) and a superintendent personnel appointment (Alyssa Byrd as curriculum coordinator), both approved by roll call.
What happens next: staff will share the environmental-walkthrough report from Gandy & Associates with the board for final guidance on salvage, auction procedures and potential further environmental testing. The board asked legal counsel to review liability and waiver language if the district proceeds with salvage or limited public access inside the building.
