Edinburg proclaims Domestic Violence Awareness Month; survivor urges more support for shelters

The Edinburg City Council on Oct. 21 proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and heard testimony from a survivor and local advocates who urged continued city support for shelters and services.

A resident who identified herself as Sonia described a long abusive marriage, multiple interactions with law enforcement, and a violent incident in which she said her husband threatened her with a gun. She told the council she sought help from Mujeres Unidas and said ‘‘awareness is a first step toward change.’’ She urged the public to support survivors and local services.

Representatives of Mujeres Unidas — including Estela Deanda and board president Tricia Watts — thanked the council for support and described the nonprofit’s regional work. The agency told the council it served 170 people seeking shelter or supportive services from January through September of the current year and asked for continued municipal and community help.

Mujeres Unidas also announced a community fundraiser on Nov. 13 at the city Performing Arts Center to raise support for services and to feature local artists. Council members and the mayor thanked the speakers for sharing personal testimony and for the work that local advocates provide to survivors.

The proclamation recognizes the city’s interest in prevention and survivor support and directs continued public awareness activities during October. No ordinance or new city funding was approved at the meeting; advocates requested ongoing support and greater legal protections for survivors.
