Edinburg held a brief special meeting on Oct. 21 to honor Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. with a tribute video, formal remarks and a reception in City Hall.
Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. thanked the council and community, reflected on his decades of service and said he plans to finish his current term while spending more time with family and his business. "I did not expect this," he said, and added that after a health diagnosis earlier this year he intends to "finish my term" and remain available to the city where needed.
Council members, including Mayor Pro Tem Jason De Leon and other colleagues, offered short remarks praising Garza’s leadership, mentorship and ethics. Several emphasized that Garza had helped stabilize the city during difficult periods and described him as a ‘‘steady hand’’ in local government.
Following the remarks, the council adjourned the special meeting and invited attendees to a small reception in the courthouse foyer for cake, photos and a chance to thank the mayor in person. The gathering was described as a recognition of Garza’s contributions to Edinburg and a chance for the community to offer good wishes for his next chapter.
The regular council meeting resumed later the same evening; no additional action was taken regarding the mayor’s office during the special tribute.
