Monroe Street Bridge to close March 8 for major reconstruction; detours and school routing plans expected to affect Sylvania traffic

City transportation staff updated the Sylvania Schools Board on a large Monroe Street Bridge reconstruction project that will require a full bridge closure beginning March 8 for approximately 150 contractor‑bid days. The project includes a widened deck with space for an added travel lane, a 14‑foot dedicated pedestrian and bicycle path, new ramps and consolidation of three existing signalized intersections into a coordinated signal system.
Project staff told the board the contract contains incentive and disincentive provisions tied to schedule; early completion earns contractor payments, and delays incur penalties. "150 was bid by our contractor," the presenter said, noting the incentive structure is intended to encourage timely completion. Construction will proceed in phases with traffic flips so portions of the work can be completed while minimizing overall closure length, but the presenter warned that the closure and detours will produce a scatter effect across local streets and increase traffic on Heroux, Holland Sylvania, Sylvania Avenue and Whitford Road.
The presenter said the northbound on‑ramp by Cushman Road will be closed permanently and that detours for vehicles will direct drivers to Stearns Road and Dorr Street for expressway access; truck routing signage will be posted. Pedestrians currently using the bridge will be detoured to the Semanja River Trail, which the presenter said will be kept open as much as practical during construction though short closures for flooding are possible.
Board members asked about routing for school buses and the district’s transportation team said it has prepared multiple routing options, will monitor traffic patterns during the first days of the closure and refine bus routes and pickup staging through spring break. "We're going to see what happens and then we'll hone in on exactly where we're going to go," a district transportation official said, asking the community for patience during the transition.
The presenter also described added resurfacing work (Monroe Street resurfaced from Acres Road to Nantucket Drive), night work components, and a later streetscape phase that will add trees and brick pavers to improve the corridor’s appearance after major construction is complete. No specific changes to school schedules were announced; district staff said routing and staging plans will be shared with parents as they are finalized.
