Summary
After a presentation from Asbate representatives, the Show Low board approved a proposal to change the district medical insurance provider, citing wellness offerings and projected first-year savings of roughly $82,000 to $160,000; the move also gives employees access to new telehealth and disease-management programs.
The Show Low School District board voted to change the district's medical insurance provider to Asbate following a presentation by company representatives.
Chuck Nelson, an Asbate representative, described Asbate as a large medical pool for Arizona school districts and outlined wellness and clinical programs the company offers, including virtual primary care, behavioral health and disease-management services. "We are the largest medical pool program in Arizona," Nelson said during the presentation.
Nelson and a colleague highlighted programs the district would retain and expand, including Teladoc 24/7 access and specialized services such as Virta Health for type 2 diabetes support, Skin IO for early skin-cancer detection and Hinge Health for at-home physical therapy. They also said Asbate offers multiple plan designs that districts can choose from and optional voluntary benefits.
Miss Davis, who brought the proposal to the board, and Asbate's representatives said apples-to-apples comparisons of currently available plans showed projected district savings in the first year of roughly $82,000 up to nearly $160,000 depending on plan selection. Board members said the projected savings and enhanced benefits were persuasive.
A board member moved to approve changing medical providers to Asbate as presented; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote. Administration said the approved rates include access to broker services to assist the district with alternative benefit planning.
The board did not record a roll-call tally in the public transcript; presenters and staff said final plan selection details would be worked out with the district and broker.
