George Kenny, chair of the Waynesville Public Art Commission, presented the commission's selection process for a new Main Street mural and introduced finalist Max Dowdle, who joined the meeting virtually. Kenny said the commission received 15 qualified applicants, narrowed to seven, then to four finalists, and that the selected design will depict historic images including the original Main Street arch. Kenny said the artist aims to install the mural at the Truist drive-through area at 121 North Main Street, with work beginning in April and a dedication planned for early May.
Max Dowdle, the nominee, said he is working on a statewide project of 100 murals across North Carolina and is enthusiastic about the Waynesville commission's design and public engagement. After the presentation a councilmember moved to commission Dowdle for fabrication and installation; the motion was approved by voice vote.
What comes next: the public art commission and the artist will finalize design tweaks, schedule installation in coordination with the property owner, and return to council or staff with any permit or logistics needs.
