Evelyn, a junior at Folsom High School, told the City Council the Metal Maniacs robotics team is not asking for city funds but hopes the city can help amplify the team’s drive to recruit mentors and sponsors. “We’re not asking for any money. But we’re here to introduce a movement our team coined as the Silicon Foothills,” she said.
Harsika, the team captain, described the First Tech Challenge format and the competitive level the team will face in Palo Alto. “This year, for the first time ever, our team Metal maniacs are advancing to the NorCal championships in Palo Alto,” she said, noting the team represents the top 20% of youth robotics programs.
Nick, the hardware lead, emphasized the need for mentors and volunteers: “No tech experience needed. Every mentor and volunteer makes a positive impact,” he said, pointing to Aero Metals as an existing partner. Ben, the software lead, added that team‑hosted tournaments draw hundreds of students and families and generate direct and indirect local spending.
Council members responded with encouraging remarks and wished the team luck at the championships. The students provided a one‑page summary about First Tech Challenge and offered to bring a robot for a demonstration at a future meeting.
The presentation was part of the meeting’s public comment period and did not request formal council action.
