Girl Scouts ask commission to address Pioneer Park fee that priced out day camp
Summary
Julie Saenz testified that a 2024 fee change putting the nonprofit rate at $500 per day made Girl Scout day camp at Pioneer Park financially unsustainable for the volunteer-run local service unit; she asked the commission to agendize the issue for discussion.

Julie Saenz, speaking for a local Girl Scouts service unit, told the Recreation & Parks Commission that Pioneer Park has long been the site of the troop's day-camp activities and that a 2024 fee change has made continued use unaffordable for the small volunteer nonprofit.
Saenz said the troop is a local, volunteer-run nonprofit that does not operate with large funding and that every dollar goes back into supporting the girls. "With the fee change, the nonprofit rate is now $500 per day," she said, and added that paying that rate for 10–15 days a year would "wipe out our entire budget" and likely force the troop to raise prices or cancel camp. Saenz said the service unit had to cancel the previous year's camp for that reason and requested the commission put the item on a future agenda so the matter can be discussed and considered in more detail.
Commission thanked Saenz and did not take immediate action; staff and commissioners noted the commission's role in fee discussion and upcoming fee-structure items being prepared for council review.
