Putnam County adds 40.02 acres to gun-club lease, citing training and public use

Putnam County commissioners voted Feb. 10 to amend the county’s lease with the Putnam County Gun Club to add two tracts totaling about 40.02 acres to the club’s existing leased property.
County staff provided background on the lease: the county acquired roughly 100 acres in 1967, entered a lease with the Putnam County Park Gun Club Inc. in 2002, amended that lease in 2019, and recently acquired two additional tracts by deed in Dec. 2025. County staff said the drafted amendment would incorporate the newly acquired 40.02 acres into the current lease and requested commissioners’ signatures.
A club representative described facility upgrades and community use: “We’ve added key card access … added several cameras,” the representative said, and noted the clubhouse is used by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and other law-enforcement agencies for training. He said membership stands at “just over 900,” that matches and classes are open to the public, and that the club hosts youth day events that draw hundreds of children.
Commissioner Ellis moved to amend the lease to add the 40.02 acres; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Why it matters: The amendment increases the acreage under the club’s lease and formalizes use that includes public matches, training for law enforcement, and youth programming. The lease retains the county’s previous expiration provisions as described in staff materials.
