Commission approves multiple wall signs for new Gahanna Civic Center

The Gahanna Planning Commission on Feb. 11 approved a signage variance permitting five wall signs at the new Gahanna Civic Center, 825 Tech Center Drive.
Staff explained the site is zoned Innovation and Manufacturing and the zoning code allows one wall sign up to 50 square feet; the applicant requested five wall signs totaling about 98.34 square feet with the largest individual sign measured at 65.81 square feet. "Staff has no objection to the variance as submitted," planning staff said, noting the total site signage including a compliant monument sign would be about 123.66 square feet, well under the 400-square-foot site maximum.
Applicant and vendor representatives told commissioners the multiple signs are necessary because the building houses several uses — the senior center, event center, police headquarters, and other city departments — and described the sign locations, materials, and color palette (limestone backdrop with gray lettering). Commissioners asked questions about visibility and materials and were satisfied with answers about wayfinding, two entrances and a rear staff entrance.
Commissioner Mako moved to approve item V0004-2026; the motion was seconded and the commission voted to grant the variances.
Next steps: sign permit and building permit review will follow; staff and the applicant indicated standard permitting and material details will be handled through the vendor and permit process.
