The council approved a resolution authorizing application for a USDOT BUILD grant to fund a Hometown Crossroads safety and mobility study of the Verona Ave/Main Street intersection, seeking up to $4 million with an estimated local match of about $800,000.
The Verona Common Council voted Feb. 9 to authorize staff to apply for a USDOT BUILD grant to fund a Hometown Crossroads safety and mobility study focused on the Verona Avenue and Main Street intersection.
City staff said the study would evaluate existing conditions, develop alternatives and produce design‑level plans (targeting roughly 60% design) to address congestion and safety issues affecting pedestrians, bicyclists, e‑bikes, school buses and emergency vehicles. The application range discussed was $3.6 million to $4 million; at the $4 million level the federal share would be about $3.2 million and the local match roughly $800,000.
Jamie (city staff) noted the study area extends from Paoli on the south to Cross Country Road on the north and from 9 Mound Road on the west to Enterprise Drive on the east, and that the project could later support a second BUILD application for construction if the study results justify capital funding. Staff said they are collecting letters of support from businesses and stakeholders and invited resident letters of support, noting a filing deadline of Feb. 24.
Council members described the intersection as the city's most persistent transportation problem and supported pursuing federal funds. The motion for resolution R‑26‑008 passed on a voice vote.
