Council delays vote on 130‑unit senior housing preliminary plan for two weeks

The Verona Common Council voted Feb. 9 to refer resolution 26-006, a preliminary plan for a 130‑unit independent/assisted/memory care senior housing community, to the next council meeting to allow further consultation with the city's senior services director.
Alder Swanson moved to consider the item at the next meeting after asking the applicant to contact the senior services director; the motion to refer passed 4–3. The motion follows extended questioning from alderpersons about unit mix, pricing, staffing and impacts on city senior services.
An applicant representative said operations would be managed by Health Dimensions Group (Dimensions Living), which the applicant described as an experienced operator "out of Minneapolis" that manages more than 50 communities and over 15 in Wisconsin. On pricing the applicant offered local comparables and said independent living studio units average about $3,700 and one‑bedroom independent units range roughly $3,500–$4,500.
Council members expressed mixed views: some said the proposal fits the city's need for more senior housing but wanted the city's senior services director to assess impacts on programming, transportation and staffing. Alder Helmke said he was "not comfortable voting on it today" without more information. City staff clarified that assisted living and memory care are state‑regulated and licensed while independent living is not.
The council agreed staff and the applicant will reach out to the senior services director and return the matter at the next council meeting.
