Committee debates 2026-27 calendar timing and PD days amid athletics and contract constraints

The school committee spent a large portion of the meeting debating next years calendar options, focusing on whether to move one or more professional-development (PD) days to the week before student arrival. Committee members cited competing priorities: teacher preparation needs and PD-council input, coaches preseason rules (MIAA limits on when full practice may begin), family childcare impacts of added half days, and contract considerations around PD models.

One option under discussion would shift a September PD day to Aug. 25 (or similar) so that staff have a full day of PD immediately before students return; others urged caution because PD planning typically takes place over the summer and many PD planners are not on duty until late August. Committee members noted precedent in some nearby districts for beginning staff days before Labor Day but emphasized that Hollistons collective-bargaining agreement and PD Council input matter to any change.

The athletic calendar was a prominent factor: members pointed out MIAA rules that limit when full practices and preseason activities may begin. Moving staff/student start dates earlier could compress the calendar or shift end dates and affect vacations and extracurricular schedules.

The committee agreed to gather input from the PD Council, the HFD union leadership and other stakeholders, include calendar options in upcoming office hours and the communications newsletter, and revisit the calendar at the Feb. 26 meeting. No final calendar change was approved; the committee voted only to postpone a final decision pending stakeholder feedback.
