Bronx Borough Hall marked World Hijab Day on Feb. 1 with a fashion show presented by Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson alongside Bronx Fashion Week and Wardrobe NYC, highlighting the hijab’s cultural meanings and cross-community interest in styling it.
Bronx Borough Hall hosted a World Hijab Day fashion show on Feb. 1 presented by Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson alongside Bronx Fashion Week and stylist team Wardrobe NYC, organizers and attendees said.
The event brought together community members, designers and advocates for an afternoon of storytelling, conversation and runway presentations that organizers said aimed to spotlight the cultural significance and personal meaning behind the hijab. "For all of the women that wear the hijab that are of the Muslim faith, it's important for us to recognize that we're all 1," an unidentified participant said, adding that the hijab is "a sign of religion, of expression, of love, of culture."
Attendees and participants framed the show as more than fashion. One participant described the hijab as a voluntary expression of faith and self-respect, saying, "Oftentimes, it's because people wanna enhance their spirituality and feel closer to, Allah. So, you know, it's a choice to wear the hijab. It's to honor yourself." Organizers emphasized that the runway blended tradition with modern styling, and that models and designers used the platform to convey messages of empowerment, pride and unity.
Speakers at the event also noted growing cross-cultural interest. "Looking forward to seeing the community come together, I think it's been great seeing individuals who are non Muslim being interested in wearing the hijab, styling it," another unidentified participant said, calling the trend evidence of "people [being] more progressive about how they look at women in hijab."
The show served both as a cultural celebration and as a public reminder about inclusion in the borough, organizers said.
