Ware County approves request to close and abandon Pine Hill Street

The Ware County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 9 to approve a request to close and abandon Pine Hill Street, a short county right-of-way located east of the Havana–Brunswick Highway. County staff said the roadway measures about 535 feet in length and is a 40-foot right-of-way, and that two adjacent property owners — including a representative of Transformation Church of Waycross — applied for the abandonment.
County staff explained that the road has not been actively used or maintained for roughly 10–15 years and that the route runs from Brunswick Highway toward the back of the nearby mall. "It's about, 535 foot, more or less, with a 40 foot right of way," staff member Dustin told commissioners during the public hearing.
Commissioners asked about drainage and utility impacts; staff noted a sewer line runs along the easement, a drainage ditch and a retention pond near the mall, and that the mall and other parcels already have multiple access points from Brunswick Highway. The county said that if the ROW is abandoned it would be split equally between adjacent owners "from a county standpoint."
No members of the public opposed the closure during the hearing. After hearing from the applicant and staff, the commission carried the hearing into the regular meeting and later made a formal motion to approve the abandonment; the motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
Next steps include administrative processing of the abandonment and any deed transfers to adjacent property owners as prescribed by county procedures.
