Resorts World applicants defend AML reforms and board governance; board recommends approval

Four nominees tied to Resorts World Las Vegas appeared Feb. 11 for suitability consideration before the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Former governor Brian Sandoval, who had been appointed Resorts World's board chair, described the board’s work to rebuild a culture of compliance and said he has participated actively on compliance committee meetings since his appointment.

AG (Andrew) Burnett, who previously chaired the Gaming Control Board, described his regulatory background and his work on compliance committees. He told the panel the property has undertaken “a deep dive” into the money‑laundering weaknesses and has strengthened executive staffing, training and internal controls. "We are positioned for success," Burnett said.

Kong Han Tan and Huey Lim, members of Genting’s global leadership, said they are committed to exporting governance improvements learned in Nevada to the operator’s global portfolio. Tan said the parent company "took accountability" and assembled a new in‑house team and independent advisers after the prior incidents that led to enforcement action.

Board members extensively questioned applicants about AML controls, whether compliance or marketing had ultimate authority over patron bans, and how day‑to‑day oversight works between localized compliance committees and parent company oversight. The applicants said the property now has an empowered AML lead, Jennifer Roberts, and a compliance committee at property and parent levels.

Judge Assad moved to recommend approval; the panel cast unanimous votes in favor. The matter will proceed to the Nevada Gaming Commission for final action.
