Commission tables fireworks ordinance after concerns about process and data

Denise (city staff) told the commission the item would establish specific dates and times for fireworks sales and discharge and would contain language to make the schedule consistent in future years. She also corrected an earlier staff report: the previously reported 2025 fireworks sales tax revenue of $6,520 was revised to $13,039, reflecting omitted collections and proper NAICS accounting.
Commissioner Britney (newly elected) said she was still learning open‑meetings law and worried commissioners did not all have the same information when past votes were reported. "I'm suggesting that we table it because it's not urgent," Britney said, arguing the commission should confirm data and process before adopting a perpetual ordinance.
Other commissioners differed. Some said years of previous discussion made the proposal familiar and favored voting; others recommended waiting until the mayor could join the full commission. A motion to table the ordinance was made, seconded and approved by voice vote; the commission did not assign an ordinance number at the meeting.
What’s next: The commission asked staff to schedule additional review and to advise the city manager; members indicated they expect a final discussion and vote when the full commission (including the mayor) is present.
