Council authorizes bids for Ewing Road repairs; sewer, DPW projects advance

Crafton Borough Council voted Feb. 12 to advertise bids for a targeted repair of subsidence on Ewing Road after geotechnical testing found compaction and localized water infiltration as the primary issues. Engineers recommended cutting out the affected sections, recompacting with appropriate material, installing an underdrain where water is seeping beneath the pavement, and repaving.
The estimated cost range presented to council was about $70,000 (alternate) to $95,000. Acting engineering staff emphasized that earlier, short‑term repairs had not followed engineer recommendations and that the current plan reflects geotechnical recommendations. "We're fairly certain ... this will at least last 10 years, and possibly indefinitely," an engineering representative said, while noting retaining walls and long‑term maintenance may still be necessary.
Council also received updates that the Broadhead Sewer Separation Project resumed trench work following the storm and that curb and sidewalk reconstruction on Warren Street and sewer structure construction on Park Street are scheduled to begin pending weather. The DPW building interior construction is ongoing; utility connections and drywall remain dependent on service installations and warm work conditions.
Council members asked about confidence in the repair solution given prior long closures of Ewing Road; staff said the geotechnical assessment and recommended underdrain materially reduce the risk that the road will quickly fail again. The motion to put the Ewing Road design out to bid carried by voice vote.
