Council approves nonreverting firearms fund to pay for sheriff's range maintenance

The Boone County Council adopted Ordinance 2026-O-1 to create a nonreverting firearms fund for the sheriff's office, which supporters said will centralize payments from outside agencies for range maintenance and replacement of worn equipment.
Tony Harris of the sheriff's office told the council that the fund would pay for items such as backstop repairs and periodic firearm replacement that should occur every four to five years. "What this would help do is... it would help fund that line in order to replace firearms like we should be doing every 4 to 5 years," Harris said, noting some local agencies use the county range and he did not want to charge partner agencies.
Council members voted to suspend the rules to consider the ordinance the same meeting and then approved it; roll-call confirmations recorded members voting in the affirmative during the meeting.
The ordinance was presented as the first reading with an option to return for more discussion; council members chose immediate consideration and adoption.
