San Francisco Environment Department marks 30 years and previews updated climate action plan

Charles Sheehan, chief policy and public affairs officer, reviewed policy milestones from the past three decades — including the city’s three‑bin system, precautionary purchasing, the nation’s first plastic bag ban, and early solar and electrification rules — and said the department will release an updated climate action plan in 2026 that looks out to 2040.
Director’s report items noted a new Charge Up SF public map and nomination tool for EV chargers (developed with UC Berkeley), San Francisco’s eighth consecutive A rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and a public comment period for proposed edible food recovery regulations that closes Feb. 9. Staff said milestones and outreach will be highlighted during climate month in April.
