Board approves small grants and personnel appropriations including $5,000 school grant and funding for third ACO

The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors approved a series of appropriation requests during the Feb. 10 meeting, moving several small grants and a personnel funding request into the FY26 budget.
Finance staff asked the board to accept a $5,000 STEM family-event grant awarded to Cumberland County Public Schools by the Virginia Department of Education; staff noted the funds are restricted grant funds and require no local match. A motion to appropriate the $5,000 grant was made and board members voiced assent.
Staff also requested appropriation of $41,720 to fund a third animal control officer position that the department had filled in December 2025; the appropriation would cover the position from Dec. 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. A motion and second were recorded and members indicated agreement in the meeting record.
Other small, received grants were listed for appropriation into the fiscal year budget: $1,000 from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management's Radiological Emergency Preparedness program for EOC light/monitoring equipment, and a $700 award from the Virginia Fire Program Fund for computer equipment for the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department. Staff emphasized these were grant receipts and required no county matching funds.
