Mills County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a resolution on Feb. 9 authorizing the county to apply for grant funds established by Senate Bill 8 to support sheriff participation in immigration law‑enforcement agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Sheriff Hall introduced the resolution and outlined how the grant mirrors existing SB 22 procedures used for similar sheriff grant programs.
The resolution states Mills County is not required to provide matching funds and that any unused portion of funds must be returned to the Office of the Governor. Sheriff Hall and county staff emphasized the grant’s allowable uses are narrow — training, limited salary support for personnel directly involved in the program, and a small amount of equipment — and that the county would follow the program’s compliance and reporting requirements.
County staff said the program could provide a useful source of training funds and limited equipment support, but cautioned the county must keep SB 8 receipts on a separate line so the sheriff’s budget is not inadvertently reduced by other appropriations. The court agreed the county’s existing memorandum of understanding with federal partners would be referenced as the grant program proceeds.
The court voted to approve the resolution by voice vote; Commissioner Williams seconded the motion and the judge announced the ayes had it. Next steps are for the authorized official named in the resolution to sign and submit the application materials to the state.
