Chamber, residents urge downtown revitalization and visitor amenities; Cascades Park lamented

During the general public-comment period (items not on tonight's agenda), three speakers urged different priorities for Bloomington's downtown and parks.
Christopher, speaking for the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, said he expects the convention-center project to spur revitalization of the south side near 1st Street and the Walnut-College corridor. "We think that anchor there at the convention center is going to revitalize that," he said, and urged caution in city budgeting amid state-level fiscal uncertainty tied to property-tax conversations.
A speaker who identified himself as Council Chris Durban criticized the council's earlier decision not to pursue historic designation for Cascades Park, urging greater recognition of the park's age, cultural significance and natural features.
From Zoom, Cynthia Bretheim of Prospect Hill urged the council to address visitor amenities downtown, including consideration of a staffed downtown visitor center or a reliable public restroom option for visitors who do not know where the library or other facilities are located.
The council thanked the speakers and then returned to internal scheduling, setting an additional meeting for April 30 to collect budget priorities and public input.
