Portage County commissioners on June 5 approved amendments to the 2024 Community Development Block Grant that will move an existing award to a new Access Point Community Health Center location in Ravenna and shift $10,000 within Streetsboro’s CDBG allocation from demolition work to a senior grass-cutting program.
Mister Peets, speaking during the public hearing, told the board Access Point purchased a building on South Freedom Street and requested the project’s CDBG funds be redirected from 705 Oakwood Street to 771 South Freedom Street “at the same amount, no additional cost.” He also said Streetsboro had a late start on a demolition contract and asked to move $10,000 from demolition to expand grass-cutting services for seniors. “They would like to move the funding to 771 South Freedom Street in Ravenna, and at the same amount, no additional cost,” Peets said.
Commissioners asked basic questions about the Freedom Street building’s prior use and condition; Peets said it was likely an older engineering office from the 1960s–1970s and that the CDBG funds would be used to renovate it. Speaker 1 remarked that accessibility to the site is important for behavioral health clients and that coordinating transit access would be a priority.
After the public comment period, the board moved to approve the three related Access Point amendments — covering financial literacy, mental health and substance‑use counseling, and peer recovery supporter services — by voice/roll call votes recorded in the minutes as affirmatives from commissioners present. The board also approved Streetsboro’s requested intra-program reallocation of $10,000 from demolition to the senior grass program.
The amendments will be administered through Portage County Job and Family Services and implemented by Access Point Community Health Centers and Streetsboro program staff. No additional county cash match was recorded in the hearing, and speakers said the moves do not increase the total grant amount.
The board flagged follow-up steps: confirming the Freedom Street site’s renovation scope, ensuring transit access for clients, and updating the grant administration paperwork. Commissioners said staff will finalize contract amendments and report back to the board.
