Treasurer Bridal presented the treasurer's interim update, reporting the number of delinquent properties decreased from 104 to 78 since the last report and that the 2023 spring publication listed 211 parcels.
Bridal reported the county's total delinquent real-estate dollars "as we sit right now" at $324,983.62 and said that, "including interest and penalties that are out there, that jumps up to 373,730.96." The report noted that settlements for January were complete and that checks were already being received from municipalities.
During board discussion a member asked who receives interest charged on late property taxes; Bridal replied directly that the county receives that interest, explaining, "The county, yeah. And the municipalities, all the townships, because we settle in full in August, they do not get any of the interest and penalties. That's solely on the county." The board also noted that shortening the tax-collection consideration period from five years to three years will reduce future interest and penalty revenue.
The treasurer also described the county's process for published delinquent lists and confirmed 211 parcels had been published for the 2023 spring listing. No foreclosures or auction actions were recorded on the meeting record during this item.
The board received the report and asked clarifying questions about the distribution and use of interest and penalty revenue, which Treasury said flows to the general fund.
