Park Road Elementary highlights literacy interventions as first‑grade benchmark rates improve

Park Road Elementary staff presented to the Board on school culture, recent capital improvements and literacy intervention work, including results from their reading specialists’ programs.
Principal Lindsey Ali thanked donors and the PTSA for a new playground and equipment and described schoolwide engagement and character initiatives. Reading specialists Julia Ansell and Libby Day detailed a literacy intervention program that serves about 75 K–5 students at Park Road. They said the team uses district universal screening measures to identify students, applies targeted skill‑based small groups, and monitors progress biweekly to adjust instruction.
The presenters described training they received through BOCES (Letters training), which they said helped streamline identification and intervention processes and supported a shift toward the Science of Reading practices. They shared screening data showing first‑grade students meeting benchmarks increased from 62% in the fall to 74% in the winter screening; the proportion of students in the highest‑need category fell from 29% to 22% in that period.
The reading team emphasized that literacy growth is nonlinear and that students often require individualized plans and ongoing progress monitoring. Park Road staff also described piloting Amplify math in some grades and said both teachers and students responded positively to the math and literacy interventions.
The Board thanked presenters and moved to other business.
