PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Calkins Road Middle School leaders told the Pittsford board on March 11 about security, student supports and student‑led activities that they said increased engagement.
Principal Josh Walker described creation of a single point of entry to control building access and traffic‑flow changes to improve arrival safety. He said the instructional‑support team was restructured to reduce administrative barriers so teachers and service providers can respond more quickly to student needs. The counseling suite was reconfigured to provide dedicated spaces and to promote informal student visits.
Walker and colleague Mike Falzoy highlighted student council leadership in planning spirit week and fundraising: a coin drive raised more than $1,100 in three days for a local type‑1 diabetes research charity, and participation numbers for library and after‑school programs were high. They stressed a focus on social‑emotional learning and vertical alignment of standards K‑12.
The presentation emphasized student voice in planning events and in revising school routines, and administrators said they will continue work on mission‑statement alignment and summer planning.
