Board adopts 2027'28 district calendar after committee review; staff cite student wellness rationale

The Laguna Beach Unified School District board voted to adopt the 2027-28 student instructional calendar following a presentation by Assistant Superintendent Conlon and calendar-committee materials.
Conlon summarized the committee process (started in 2017) and reiterated priorities: concluding the first semester at winter break to provide families and students decompression, aligning non-student days across grade levels to reduce household disruption, and preserving instructional time ahead of AP and statewide testing. The proposed calendar includes a 79-day first semester with the secondary non-student day set for the Friday before winter break, a five-day fall/Thanksgiving break, and alignment of nonstudent days across grade levels where possible.
Board members asked about the calendar committee composition and whether the committee should have broader community representation. Staff said the calendar advisory committee is defined in the LaBUFA contract (representatives from LaBUFA, CSEA and district appointees) and general community-wide stakeholder engagement was used for the larger 2019 shift away from the post-Labor Day start. Trustees also discussed student stress and academic pacing; Dr. Keller and others said the winter-break finish is intended to support student wellness and instructional continuity. The calendar was approved by board motion and voice vote.
