Council adopts appropriation to fund Public Works facilities position and temporary support

Council adopted Appropriation Ordinance 2024‑03 to additionally appropriate $72,000 from the Public Works General Fund to fund a newly authorized facilities asset and operations controller position and to replenish temporary part‑time funding lines. Public Works Director Adam Wayson explained the figure represents the new position’s salary from the June effective date and monies used earlier for temporary help.
Wayson said the replenished temporary funds will support asset-management efforts, downtown cleanup and a short-term part‑time position to assist building-inspection services. During the continued public hearing, resident Joe/Jo(e) Davis raised concerns that the appropriation could be used as a backdoor way to hire more personnel and asked where the monies came from; the council president responded that the position was approved in a prior public process in May and fiscal impacts were considered then.
Clerk called the roll; present council members voted to adopt the ordinance. Councilmembers who spoke in favor said the funding addresses oversights from the salary ordinance and supports planned fall projects.
