Planning and Transportation staff presented a proposal Nov. 13 to merge Bloomington's traffic commission, bicycle & pedestrian safety commission and parking commission into a single Advisory Transportation Commission (ATC), a body staff says would review all transportation projects and help the city meet a stated goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2039.
Roebling, the Planning and Transportation presenter, told the Common Council the current commission structure produces fragmented decision-making and heavy reliance on volunteer labor that has left some duties incomplete. "We have a stated goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2039," Roebling said, arguing the city needs a holistic, multimodal commission to ensure projects align with the comprehensive plan and safety goals. Roebling said that, between 2019 and 2023, Bloomington recorded 43 "fatal or life-altering" crashes on its streets.
