Ordinance 2024-26, which would set maximum 2025 salaries for elected city officials, was introduced for first reading on Dec. 4 and scheduled for a special council session on Dec. 10 for discussion and a second reading at the regular Dec. 11 meeting.
Councilmember Zulek, who chaired the elected-officials salary committee, addressed public backlash about the size of the proposed increases and described the committee's process. She said the committee used five guiding principles, evaluated ten strategies and ultimately selected a midpoint approach intended to make a council stipend more compatible with part-time work. "I completely understand why people are upset," Zulek said. She also told the council she and Councilmember Daley plan to work on an amendment over the weekend to respond to concerns.
A council member noted that state law prevents substantive discussion of that ordinance during a first-reading agenda slot; the special session on Dec. 10 and the second reading on Dec. 11 are scheduled to allow full discussion and/or votes.
The council did not vote on salary levels at the Dec. 4 meeting; further debate and any formal vote will occur at the Dec. 10 special session and the Dec. 11 regular meeting.
